Chiefs Preparing for Kadarius Toney Split With Latest Decision

After a disappointing 2023 season from Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, it seemed as if the team was preparing to move on from the former first-round pick this offseason. 

However, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach had similar opinions on Toney as they are excited about seeing him on the field. Therefore, one has to believe that Kansas City has huge plans for the former New York Giants wide receiver.

That said, those plans might just be for the 2024 season as the Chiefs made a huge move on Toney's future on Thursday night.

Chiefs News: Kansas City Declines Kadarius Toney’s Fifth-Year Option

Toney was among the 12 first-round picks that had their fifth-year options declined, according to Ari Meirov. 

Chiefs fans were not surprised by this news as Toney’s short tenure has been a rollercoaster in Kansas City. If the Chiefs were to pick up the former first-round pick’s fifth-year option, it would have been $14.6 million guaranteed.

The 25-year-old wide receiver had a rough 2023 season in Kansas City after he made a bunch of plays during the team’s Super Bowl run in 2022. Toney only produced 27 receptions (38 targets) for 169 yards and two touchdowns.

The 6-foot wide receiver was inactive for the final three games of the regular season and didn’t see a single snap in the postseason. The Chiefs hope Toney can rebound from last season as they will need him with the possibility of Rashee Rice missing time because of his off-the-field issue.

Nonetheless, if Toney can live up to his first-round standing in 2024, the Chiefs will not have any issues re-signing the young wide receiver next offseason.
