Chiefs Clarify Kadarius Toney Plans After Playoff Drama
By Jovan Alford
After playing an integral role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl run in 2022, many Chiefs fans thought Kadarius Toney would carry that momentum into the 2023 season.
However, that wasn’t the case as Toney played 26 percent of offensive snaps despite seeing action in 13 regular season games. The former first-round pick was inactive for the last three regular season games and didn’t play a single snap in the postseason.
With Toney seemingly falling out of favor in Kansas City, many fans wondered if the young wide receiver would be on the roster next season, especially with the success of Rashee Rice and Justin Watson last season.
That said, the Chiefs haven’t given up on the former New York Giants wide receiver and look forward to him being on the field.
“I’m expecting him to come back ripping and ready to go,” Kansas City head coach Andy Reid said on Monday (h/t PJ Green of FOX4 Kansas City). Reid added, “We like Kadarius, it’s just a matter of having him on the field.”
The 25-year-old wide receiver is reportedly working out with Patrick Mahomes in Texas, which is a good sign if you are a Chiefs fan. For Kansas City to have a good chance at a three-peat, they need Toney to look and play like the first-round prospect he was billed as coming out of Florida.
This past season, Toney only had 27 receptions (38 targets) for 169 yards and a touchdown. He could’ve had better stats if he wasn’t inactive for the last three games of the regular season and didn’t have some disappointing drops.
The Chiefs added veteran Marquise Brown in the offseason, which will be a great addition to the receiver unit. However, if Toney can be that solid WR3 next season, it could take Kansas City’s offense to new heights.
