The Chiefs are reportedly on the verge of signing former Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins to serve as Isiah Pacheco's primary backup, a move that would give the backfield needed depth.

Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Dobbins had 925 yards from scrimmage and nine TDs in his rookie season before injuries derailed his career over the next few years.

We wrote last week that Dobbins would be the perfect RB signing and it appears the Chiefs are about to make that dream a reality.

Chiefs News: KC Close to Signing RB J.K. Dobbins

The former Ohio State Buckeyes star averages 5.8 yards per carry and 6.6 yards per catch for his career, showcasing impressive versatility and a keen ability to avoid tacklers when healthy.

Given Pacheco's physical running style, it's important for Kansas City to have a dependable player who can not only spell Pacheco when he's healthy but also start in case the two-time Super Bowl champion suffers an injury.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon are both no longer on the roster. While it's possible the Chiefs bring one of them back, neither has the upside that a healthy Dobbins does.

We've seen Brett Veach find former highly-rated prospects in the past and help them turn their careers around. If all goes well today, it looks like Dobbins is next in line. The Chiefs currently have +650 odds to win their third straight Super Bowl, but shrewd moves like this will make those odds look like a steal in a few months.
