When the Denver Broncos released talented running back Samaje Perine ahead of the roster cutdown deadline, some speculated about him being a potential target for the Chiefs. Kansas City needed more depth and quality at running back and Perine is a proven contributor.

This match made in heaven became a reality on Wednesday as the team announced the signing of the former Bengals rusher.

NFL News: Chiefs Sign RB Samaje Perine

Perine getting cut by the Broncos was a major surprise. Denver has Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime backing up Javonte Williams in the RB rotation. Perine couldn't beat out the competition, which was unexpected.

Yet, the former Oklahoma standout brings a different skill set to the Chiefs' offense. Perine was a huge factor in Denver's passing game last year, catching 50 passes for 455 yards. He was very effective on third downs as a pass catcher and blocker and played a big role in two-minute drive situations. He combined for 37 downs for the Broncos last year.

The Chiefs are particularly familiar with Perine as they faced off against him in two straight AFC championship games when he was on the Bengals. Perine had a touchdown in both games despite having a small role in the running game.

The Chiefs are reportedly signing Perine to their active roster, which means someone on the initial 53-man roster will have to get cut.

The veteran rusher joins a rotation with Isiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Carson Steele. That is a much improved running back room and Perine will presumably start the year as the RB3, with an opportunity to rise in the pecking order.
