Chiefs Land Haason Reddick in Baffling Blockbuster Projected Trade

ESPN's trade proposal that has Haason Reddick going to the Chiefs makes zero sense.

As the Kansas City Chiefs are off to a hot start with an impressive Week 1 win over the Ravens, the fans are still looking for ways to improve the team. Earlier in the week when the news of star defender Hasson Reddick hitting the trade block surfaced, Chiefs fans started dreaming about bringing the elite pass rusher to Kansas City.

Wanting Reddick to boost the defensive line is understandable. George Karlaftis and Mike Danna are a solid defensive end pairing but the depth behind them can be improved as Charles Omenihu is still sidelined. Adding another All-Pro pass rusher into the mix could catapult the Chiefs into a tier of their own as the best defensive line in the league.

However, the price tag in such a deal is the most important thing. ESPN completely missed the mark on that front in their latest article coming up with mock trades for Reddick.

In the three-team trade scenario that they put together, the Chiefs get Reddick and a 2025 sixth-rounder while giving up George Karlaftis and a fifth-round pick.

"Kansas City is trying to three-peat and could upgrade from Karlaftis -- who had 10.5 sacks a year ago but has never come close to even an average pass rush win rate -- to Reddick, a bona fide disruptor, through just a pick swap and some added money."

ESPN

This is a baffling package to offer for Reddick. First of all, it's not even clear that Reddick is an upgrade over Karlaftis. The 23-year-old defender is coming off a season where he had 10.5 sacks in 16 games while adding three more in the postseason. He has been a huge contributor and one of the most reliable defensive playmakers for the Chiefs in two Super Bowl seasons. Giving up your recent first-round pick who is still improving for a 30-year-old defender who is looking for a huge contract extension immediately doesn't make a ton of sense.

Even if we buy into the premise that Reddick is a clear upgrade over Karlaftis, he is seven years older. He has been excellent for the Eagles for the past two seasons but how many elite seasons does he really have left?

Karlaftis, on the other hand, still has untapped potential. He will require a big contract extension but the Chiefs still have another year to start worrying about that. They see Furious George as one of the cornerstones of the future of their defense and it's difficult to see them moving on from him.

If the Chiefs want to add Reddick, they will have to come up with a different trade package because the one ESPN suggested is not happening.
