As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for their preseason opener, a dark cloud by the name of Jon Gruden has been hanging over training camp. The disgraced ex-NFL head coach has been a special guest at practice throughout the last week due to his connection with head coach Andy Reid stemming from their time with the Green Bay Packers in the 1990s.

While Gruden has very few fans these days given his extremely controversial past, some Chiefs fans were fine with giving him a chance due to his friendship with Reid. Even franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes doesn't mind the situation as he loves to hear about old-school football tales.

However, the latest update stemming from Gruden's time with the team is bound to raise some red flags.

Chiefs News: Jon Gruden Present During Team Meetings

Chiefs insider Charles Goldman reported on a concerning Gruden-related detail that flew under the radar earlier this week. On Wednesday, HC Reid revealed that his fellow ex-Packers coordinator has been present during team meetings.

It's just hard to imagine there being a legitimate reason to have Gruden inside of the Chiefs' team meetings. It's one thing if he wants to tell stories or give his opinion during practice. It's an entirely different (and unacceptable) thing if he's allowed to listen in on critical information.

That isn't to say that Gruden will go out and tell the world about what the Chiefs are planning for the 2024 season. At the same time, can you truly trust the disgraced 60-year-old who hasn't held a head coaching job since he stepped away as the Las Vegas Raiders coach following the revelation of racist, misogynistic, and homophobic e-mails back in October 2021?

Since walking away from the Raiders, Gruden hasn't seen too much attention. After being removed from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor — the same team he won a Super Bowl with back in 2002 — the Sandusky, OH native worked as a New Orleans Saints consultant in 2023 before joining the Milano Seamon as an advisor ahead of the 2024 European League of Football season.

Hopefully, we don't see much more of Gruden with the Chiefs. Regardless of what positives Reid sees in his old friend, it's clear that the ex-Raiders HC's presence is a distraction. If Kansas City wants to focus on winning a third straight Super Bowl, that's the last thing they need.

Fortunately, Gruden's unwanted presence doesn't take away from the fact that the Chiefs are still DraftKings Sportsbook's +500 favorite to win Super Bowl LIX.
