Chiefs' First Official Depth Chart Features Two Big Surprises
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs released their first official depth chart ahead of a Week 1 showdown on Thursday Night Football with the Baltimore Ravens, featuring two big surprises based on what we've seen throughout training camp and the preseason.
Kansas City's defensive line saw a slight shake-up. Tershawn Wharton is listed as a starter on the interior alongside Chris Jones. While Wharton has been a valuable member of the defense in his four seasons with the team, Derrick Nnadi or Mike Pennel was expected to take the starting spot.
First-round WR Xavier Worthy is the starting punt returner, a quick reversal following special teams coordinator Dave Toub's comments that Worthy wouldn't return kicks.
Chiefs Release First Official Depth Chart Before Week 1 vs. Ravens
Wharton played nearly 37% of the defensive snaps in 2023, so it's logical that he would've earned a starting slot with a strong summer. Nnadi played over 45% while Pennel came back from injury near the playoffs to make an impact against the Ravens and 49ers.
Chiefs fans should expect a rotation along the defensive line to keep guys fresh. With the team's depth at the position, they have the luxury of always keeping fresh bodies on the field.
Worthy's status as the punt returner might be the bigger surprise. Toub compared the rookie to Tyreek Hill in the return game, suggesting massive expectations for the former Texas Longhorn star. He averaged 16.9 yards per return during his final year in college.
The best version of this Chiefs roster likely includes Worthy returning punts. This was always likely going to be the depth chart in the playoffs, and Kansas City should treat these early games against the Ravens and Bengals with the respect they deserve.
If the Chiefs get off to a fast start, they'll have tie-breakers over two major contenders in the conference. Worthy's place on the depth chart indicates just how much the organization cares about these matchups.
