Drue Tranquill was a priority free agent for the Chiefs after swiftly emerging as one of the most important defenders on the NFL's best defense in a Super Bowl win.

He was only under contract for one year after leaving the Chargers to join Kansas City last offseason, but now the former fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame is expected to sign an extension with the Chiefs to help the organization in its effort to win a record third straight Super Bowl.

Given the uncertain status of Willie Gay Jr.'s contract negotiations, keeping Tranquill is a massive, massive win for Chiefs Kingdom.

With 79 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, Tranquill filled up the stat sheet and was the team's best linebacker in pass coverage. He's an invaluable complement to Nick Bolton, and the Chiefs had one of the NFL's best linebacking groups as a result.

Tranquill added 21 tackles in the playoff run, including eight in the AFC Championship against Baltimore, establishing himself as perhaps the best value offseason signing.

After signing just a one-year, $3 million deal last year, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Tranquill will now sign a three-year, $19 million contract with $13 million guaranteed.

The Chiefs are gearing up for another terrific season. Now, all eyes are on Chris Jones and L'Jarius Sneed, though it seems the franchise is keen on keeping the core group together as much as possible.
