Jaylon Johnson Deal Sets Price for L'Jarius Sneed's Next Contract
By Joe Summers
Negotiations with L'Jarius Sneed are ongoing, though it appears that Brett Veach and the Chiefs now have a framework around which to frame a potential contract extension.
Jaylon Johnson, a star 24-year-old cornerback for the Bears, just signed a massive four-year extension with Chicago that should serve as an example of what a Sneed contract could look like. Sneed is more accomplished, though Johnson is younger, so the Chiefs may be able to keep Sneed for a bigger discount than initially expected.
Three cornerbacks make over $20 million annually, but Johnson will come in at $19, slightly below the current franchise tag mark applied to Sneed. If you're Kansas City, would you sign this deal for Sneed?
How Jaylon Johnson Contract is a Framework for L'Jarius Sneed Extension
There's a lot to parse here relative to Sneed's value. The Chiefs and Sneed's camp are both engaging with teams for a potential trade, though Kansas City is reportedly interested in keeping the corner for a shot at a three-peat if the proper market doesn't materialize.
This regime has never signed a defensive back to a long-term extension. The Chiefs brought Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid in, but in recent years we've seen Charvarius Ward, Kendall Fuller, Marcus Peters, and Juan Thornhill, just to name a few, leave the organization to play for different teams.
It feels like Sneed is next on the list, though this kind of contract is one the Chiefs could at least consider.
Whether they sign the versatile defensive leader or not, this is a sign that Sneed's value may not be as high as initially thought or that the two sides simply now have a framework determined by the market to utilize.
We'll keep you updated on any developing news regarding the negotiations.
