Chiefs Declare Start of Punting Competition With New Signing
By Cem Yolbulan
Now that the 2024 NFL Draft is officially on the books, teams have turned their attention to the undrafted free agents. This is when teams fill out the rest of their rosters to create training camp competitions or address their often-overlooked positions like kickers, punters, and long snappers. With their latest signing, the Kansas City Chiefs did both.
The Chiefs announced the signing of punter Ryan Rehkow out of BYU as an undrafted free agent. The former Big 12 Punter of the Year from head coach Andy Reid's alma mater, Rehkow will have a chance to make the final roster after competition with Matt Araiza.
Chiefs Sign One of the Best Punters in the Country as UDFA
Rehkow is the second punter Kansas City has signed in the offseason. After Tommy Townsend signed with the Houston Texans at the start of free agency, the Chiefs made the controversial decision to bring in Matt Araiza, who is yet to make his NFL debut due to his off-court legal issues.
The competition between the two punters will be one to watch in the preseason. Rehkow is known to have a big leg and was considered among the best punters in the country. In fact, he was generally expected to be drafted either as a sixth or seventh-round pick in the draft. However, teams are hesitant to use their draft picks on punters, so Rehkow, similar to Tommy Townsend, went undrafted instead.
During his BYU career, Rehkow punted the ball 176 times with an average of 47.4 yards per kick, pinning the ball inside the 20-yard line on 42 percent of his punts. Whether he will be able to translate that success to the NFL remains to be seen.
