Chiefs Cut Rookie Pass-Catcher Right After JuJu Reunion
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs continued what should be an onslaught of upcoming roster moves, officially releasing undrafted rookie WR Kyle Sheets on Monday.
After releasing Jaaron Hayek and reuniting with 2022 Super Bowl champion JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kansas City has been busy with roster moves as Tuesday's roster deadline quickly approaches.
While Sheets never had a realistic path to making the final 53-man group, his early release at least gives him time to potentially catch on with another team, even if just on the practice squad.
Chiefs News: KC Releases WR Kyle Sheets
Sheets joined the organization right before training camp following an impressive collegiate career at Slippery Rock. An All-PSAC honoree, Sheets had over 1,100 receiving yards and 17 TDs last year.
He quickly impressed the coaching staff during camp, routinely making plays against the NFL's best defense. A strong red-zone threat with multiple years of excellent production, Sheets could have an opportunity to make a practice squad and earn a midseason call-up.
Given how deep the Chiefs' receiver room is suddenly, that opportunity likely won't come in Kansas City. Nikko Remigio and Justyn Ross figure to be the top practice squad options at the position should they not make the team, with guys like Montrell Washington waiting in line as well.
Kansas City has to reduce its 90-man roster to just 53 players before Tuesday's late-afternoon deadline. Many more cuts will come, though it's interesting that the Chiefs have already cut two receivers while adding Smith-Schuster.
How Brett Veach treats the position will ultimately determine the exact makeup of the roster as the organization aims for a historic three-peat.
