Chiefs Coach Teases Potential Roster Move Ahead of Week 5
By Cem Yolbulan
The Kansas City Chiefs are sitting atop the NFL with a perfect record through four games. They host the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football before their bye week.
Things, however, aren't going as well as their record would suggest. Rashee Rice joined Hollywood Brown on injured reserve this week, leaving the Chiefs extremely short-handed in the wide receiver room.
The lack of depth on the WR front was further exacerbated on Friday when Mecole Hardman missed practice with a knee injury. With his status for Monday in jeopardy, the Chiefs hinted at a potential call-up from the practice squad.
According to Chiefs insider Pete Sweeney, special teams coordinator Dave Toub mentioned Nikko Remigio and Montrell Washington as possibilities to replace Hardman.
Chiefs News: Nikko Remigio & Montrell Washington Could Replace Mecole Hardman in Week 5
Hardman hasn't recorded any offensive stats so far this season but has continued in his role as a return specialist. He has returned six punts for 40 yards and three kicks for 80 yards through four games.
If Hardman is to miss the game against the Saints, someone else has to step up as the return man. In addition to Remigio and Washington, the Chiefs could also consider Skyy Moore, who had return duties in 2022, or Carson Steele. Xavier Worthy is an option too, but it's unlikely that the team would take that risk given the injuries to Brown and Rice.
Remigio has been on the Chiefs practice squad since the start of last season but has yet to make his NFL debut. He was an electric punt returner during his lone season at Fresno State, returning 13 punts for 259 yards and two touchdowns.
On the other hand, Washington had return duties with the Denver Broncos in 2022 as a rookie, averaging 8.5 yards per punt return and 18.9 yards per kick return. If elevated, he would be making his season debut after appearing in six games for the Chiefs last season.
