Chiefs Get Big Update on Injured Starter Just Before Week 4
Update: Head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday that Mike Danna is unlikely to play. What follows is the original story after his return to practice.
It's Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season and the Kansas City Chiefs are set to face the rival Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium on Sunday. Even though the Chiefs have had the Chargers' number for quite some time, it never hurts to hear some great news before the game — especially as it comes in the form of a potential reinforcement.
Well, it turns out that the defending back-to-back Super Bowl Champions got exactly that following Friday's practice.
Chiefs Injury News: DT Michael Danna Returns to Practice
Chiefs defensive end Michael Danna returned to practice on Friday, according to Arrowhead Pride's Pete Sweeney. The injured veteran had missed Thursday's session with a calf injury, so the latest update is more than welcomed by Kansas City fans.
Danna has been one of the Chiefs' key defenders ever since he was drafted 177th overall in 2020. The former Michigan Wolverine had appeared in each of the team's first three games to begin the season, however, his absence during yesterday's practice caused some concern.
Nevertheless, Danna appears to be trending toward playing this Sunday. The 26-year-old DE has been a solid force this season, registering eight solo tackles and 0.5 sacks while playing 65% of defensive snaps. He's currently Pro Football Focus' No. 34-graded exterior defender in terms of run stoppage (63.7) and No. 56 regarding overall defense (60.8).
Danna has also seen a ton of success against the Chargers throughout his five-year career. The Chiefs are 5-2 against the Chargers when Danna is playing as he recorded 12 solo tackles, 5.0 sacks, and a forced fumble in those contests.
The good news for him is that more success could be on the horizon. Danna and the Chiefs are currently the 7-point road favorites over the Chargers, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
