After cutting down their roster to 53 players for the season, the Kansas City Chiefs have been building out their practice squad. While the 16-man group has rookies and developmental projects the Chiefs want to keep around, it also has some notable absences. One of those is the sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, cornerback Kamal Hadden.

The former Tennessee standout has already reportedly signed with the Green Bay Packers practice squad.

Chiefs News: 2024 Draft Pick Kamal Hadden Already Signs Elsewhere

What makes this notable is the fact that it represents a rare miss for GM Brett Veach. The Chiefs very rarely part ways with draft picks before they play a game for the team, especially in the secondary. In recent years, Veach's track record of defensive backs has been quite impressive.

L'Jarius Sneed was a huge win in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson were diamonds in the rough in the mid and late rounds in 2022. Chamarri Conner, last year's fourth-round pick, had a solid rookie season. Even the seventh-round pick Nic Jones played a role last year and appeared in every postseason game.

Add early-round picks like Trent McDuffie and Juan Thornhill, and you have one of the best hit rates in draft picks.

That is what makes this Hadden decision so surprising. On paper, the odds of a sixth-round pick working out are not very high, so cutting Hadden now will likely not come back to haunt the Chiefs. Plus, they already have another rookie cornerback in Jaden Hicks who already looks like a steal. Therefore, this may not matter much, but wasting a draft pick and admitting a mistake so quickly can be startling for a franchise that doesn't make too many of them.
