There was a belief that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney might not be on the roster this season as he was inactive for the final three games of the 2023 regular season and the entire playoff run.

However, the Chiefs' brass led by head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach threw their support behind Toney this offseason. Reid told reporters in April that he expects Toney to be “ripping and ready to go” and that they like the young wide receiver.

But the next month, the Chiefs declined his fifth-year option, making him an unrestricted free agent after this season and not guaranteed to make the 53-man roster.

With KC possibly not having Rashee Rice for parts of the 2024 season and Skyy Moore not living up to expectations, it could open up the door for the former first round pick to be an integral part of the offense.

However, to start training camp, Toney was seen working out with the running backs on Sunday but eventually worked his way back to the wide receiver group, per ESPN’s Adam Teicher.

It’s shocking to see Toney working out with the RBs since he hasn’t played the position in his NFL nor collegiate careers. But it could benefit the 25-year-old receiver as he has the speed and skills to be utilized across the formation.

Kansas City’s backfield is loaded with talent, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Toney line up in the backfield at some point this season.
