Chargers Hosting Chiefs Castaway for Visit on Monday
By Joe Summers
Former Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is still looking for a new team and he's now set to visit with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.
He'd been tied to the Chargers in early April, though this is the most significant sign that Los Angeles is seriously considering adding the deep threat. Valdes-Scantling's regular season didn't go as Chiefs fans hoped, but he came up clutch in the playoffs and remains an NFL-caliber receiver.
For a Chargers team in desperate need of productive receivers, Valdes-Scantling represents an understandable dart throw.
LA Chargers Reportedly Working Out Marquez Valdes-Scantling
It was never expected that Valdes-Scantling would stay on the Chiefs, though he can still be a valuable contributor to a team in need of a deep threat. He's a logical fit with Justin Herbert's bazooka arm, though it is slightly funny to consider a rival signing a player that Kansas City deemed unfit to stick on the roster.
While Valdes-Scantling had only 21 catches for 315 yards and one TD in the regular season, he came alive in the playoffs with 128 yards and a TD in the Super Bowl. By catching the game-clinching pass in the AFC Championship game, the former Packer cemented himself as a legend in Kansas City.
The Chargers currently expect 2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnston, Joshua Palmer and 2024 second-rounder Ladd McConkey to lead the receiver group, leaving an obvious need that Valdes-Scantling could fill.
I don't expect him to be a major weapon at this point in his career, but he could still help Los Angeles as they try to rebuild the offense following the departures of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.
