Brett Veach Reveals Underrated Reason Chiefs Drafted Xavier Worthy
By Joe Summers
Xavier Worthy is already turning heads with his incredible speed, though Chiefs' GM Brett Veach recently revealed an underrated reason that Kansas City traded up for the Texas star in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Sure, Worthy's speed is a great selling point, but his mental acumen was also a major reason the Chiefs were enamored with the former Longhorn.
Appearing on SiriusXM Radio, Veach explained the Chiefs' position.
Brett Veach Explains Why Chiefs Drafted WR Xavier Worthy
Veach is quick to credit Worthy's ability to get in and out of breaks and use his physical gifts to succeed. That being said, he admits that Andy Reid demands a lot out of wide receivers and Patrick Mahomes is now "getting on the same page mentally on the coach."
As Veach explains, "We're always certainly going to want talented guys that can run fast, but I think, just his ability to process the information throughout the pre-draft process was important to us."
Worthy's versatility was praised, and Veach continued, "We got the sense that from a mental standpoint, he can handle a lot." That falls in line with the coaching staff's high praise for Worthy already, as it seems like the organization has major expectations for the first-round selection.
By all accounts, Worthy is the man Kansas City wanted. He's not only a dynamic receiver but can contribute on special teams as well, and swooping him from Buffalo is just a cherry on top of the whole ordeal.
We'll soon see if Veach is right about Worthy's potential. I'm inclined to believe he is.
