Bill Self Makes Swift Roster Move Following Elmarko Jackson News
By Joe Summers
Bill Self and the Jayhawks' men's basketball team secured the commitment of Mississippi State transfer guard Shakeel Moore on Wednesday. The news came shortly after it was announced Elmarko Jackson suffered a season-ending knee injury, so Self wasted little time in finding a replacement.
Moore averaged 7.9 points per game for the Bulldogs last year, shooting a career-high 46.8% from the field with strong defensive chops. With Johnny Furphy gone to the NBA and Jackson injured,
In addition to those two vacancies, Florida transfer G Riley Kugel reversed his commitment, leaving plenty of space for Moore to step into the rotation.
Kansas Jayhawks Land Mississippi State G Shakeel Moore
A starter for parts of three seasons at Mississippi State, Moore brings toughness, perimeter shooting, and heavy experience to Bill Self's guard rotation. Losing Jackson hurts, especially knowing he'd have another year in the system to develop, though Moore helps soften the blow.
For this career, Moore averages 1.4 steals per game, helping create a formidable defensive backcourt between him and Dajuan Harris.
Kansas is currently tied with Connecticut with the best odds to win the NCAA Tournament (+1000) at FanDuel Sportsbook. Self's roster is loaded and certainly among the best in the country on paper. Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams will be back, welcoming in a strong transfer class and five-star freshman Flory Bidunga.
Moore likely won't be a starter but he'll fight for heavy minutes based on his defensive chops. It wouldn't stun me to see him get a spot start occasionally, Nonetheless, this is a great get for Kansas and makes it easier to move forward without Furphy and Jackson.
