The Chiefs' second-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft, OT Kingsley Suamataia, hails from BYU just like his new coach, but Andy Reid was quick to shut down any theories that he'll show favoritism to the rookie.

Suamataia told reporters that he calls Reid his "uncle" and that he's a BYU legend. When speaking to local media following the Chiefs' rookie minicamp, Reid admitted that he knows a lot of Suamataia's family but assured those present that he's all about business.

I'm optimistic that Suamataia will eventually earn the starting left tackle job over 2023 third-rounder Wanya Morris, though he'll have to prove his worth with his play on the field.

Andy Reid Dismisses "Favoritism" Worry With OT Kingsley Suamataia

We should see a healthy competition between Suamataia and Morris, though Suamataia has both the better pedigree and better raw physical skills. He gave up just two sacks as BYU's starting left tackle in 2023 and has been clocked at a remarkable 21.5 MPH.

With rare quickness to complement his size, Suamataia projects as a long-term answer to protect Patrick Mahomes' blind side. He needs to refine his technique a bit but I'm fully confident in the Chiefs' coaching staff to mold him into a quality offensive lineman.

As Reid said though, "when you're here, it's work, not favoritism." The three-time Super Bowl-winning coach pointed out that Suamataia did a nice job learning, and he'll need to continue his hard work to win a starting job by Week 1.

We'll see what happens throughout training camp and the rest of the offseason program, though this is a strong start for the BYU rookie.
