The Chiefs had a peculiar mistake late in the win over the Falcons, as Xavier Worthy seemed to slow down on a route, leading to a confusing incompletion in a critical moment. Now, we may know what happened.

Speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Andy Reid quickly pointed out that Worthy was not at fault. In fact, Reid said a different player ran the wrong route, so Worthy slowed up to avoid getting in his space.

Reid neglected to specifically name the player, though a second watch at the play seems to implicate Rashee Rice.

Andy Reid Clarifies Late Offensive Mistake vs. Falcons on Key Play

Both Rice and Worthy ran underneath drag routes. Patrick Mahomes appears to try to throw to Worthy, but the rookie had already stopped his route and the ball fell to the turf. The mistake forced a punt with just over two minutes left, then the defense stepped up to close the game.

It could've been disastrous, though the Chiefs escaped without any harm. If it was Rice who ran the incorrect route, it's hard to be upset with him. He's been perhaps the best WR in the NFL through three weeks after a spectacular game that saw him catch 12 passes for 110 yards and a TD.

Fans should look at this as a learning experience that both Rice and Worthy will grow from. Kansas City's offense has been a tad out of sync thus far, though Rice has been a massive bright spot.

With a matchup against a banged-up Chargers team waiting in Week 4, the offense has an opportunity to right the ship. Expect Rice to remain the focal point of the unit, but Worthy will have his chance to shine as well.
