Andy Reid Announces Plans for Chiefs Starters in Preseason Opener
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in their first preseason game on Saturday, battling a familiar face in former offensive coordinator Doug Pederson.
Andy Reid is notoriously close to the vest with how he deploys starters during these preseason contests, and he revealed on Wednesday how he plans to utilize his major players in this inaugural matchup.
Kansas City's leader claims the starters will play the first quarter before turning things over to the backups, though it's unlikely that Patrick Mahomes or Travis Kelce see any significant action.
Andy Reid Reveals Preseason Week 1 Plan for Chiefs Starters
While some starters will likely play the whole first quarter, Mahomes will be lucky to get even a single series. Reid knows he can't put his stars in harm's way, especially in a contest that doesn't mean anything.
Saturday's contest is a major opportunity for someone to separate himself in a crowded wide receiver room. Backup QB Carson Wentz will get his first action as a Chief as well, but the primary goal is for everyone to make it through the contest healthy.
The last thing anyone wants is for an important player to go down with an injury, so Reid won't put anyone of significant magnitude at risk.
That's not to say the game doesn't have meaning for players fighting for a roster spot though. In addition to Chiefs on the bubble, rookies like Kingsley Suamataia will get to shake off the rust and nerves in their first NFL action.
It's an exciting time. However, don't for one second think that Reid is being honest in saying the starters will play the entire first quarter.
