The Chiefs and Chris Jones are widely expected to come to an agreement on a contract extension this offseason, though one surprise AFC West rival is reportedly throwing its hat into the mix.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Las Vegas Raiders want to poach Jones from the Chiefs to bolster their defensive line alongside Maxx Crosby.

It'd be a stunning betrayal of Kansas City, and Garafolo declines to get into specifics, though it makes sense that the Raiders want Jones' services after hiring defensive-minded head coach Antonio Pierce to lead the franchise.

Chiefs Rumors: Raiders Reportedly Want to Poach Chris Jones

Take this report with a grain of salt, because there isn't much actual reporting going on. It sounds more like rumors and conjecture, though I doubt Garafolo would make the statement unless he'd heard something over the last couple of weeks.

After placing the franchise tag on L'Jarius Sneed, all eyes are on Jones' contract situation. He's publicly declared his intention to stay in Kansas City, albeit inebriated at the Super Bowl parade,

I'd be surprised if the Chiefs placed the tag on Sneed without making some sort of legitimate progress on an extension with Jones. He's spent his entire career with the organization and is a no-doubt Hall of Famer, but the impacts he makes both on and off the field are hard to quantify.

Brett Veach will likely do everything in his power to keep Jones for at least one more year, especially if a potential consequence would be facing Jones twice a year within the division. With 26 combined sacks in the last two years, the former Defensive Player of the Year candidate is still a game-wrecking force on the defensive line and someone no offense wants to face.

We'll keep you updated on the progress of a potential extension or if any other team reportedly joins the fray, but I'm hoping the Chiefs get a deal done with Jones sooner than later.
