After a loss in Week 1 of the preseason to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Kansas City Chiefs dropped a one-point game to the Detroit Lions.

While they lost 24-23, the score wasn't what mattered. Instead, the focus was all on Patrick Mahomes throwing a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce. After everyone gets over that play, the focus will shift again to the depth chart.

The true importance of these exhibition games is helping coaches figure out who should be on the 53-man roster. With one more game to play in the preseason, these six players find themselves firmly on the bubble.

6. Ian Book, Quarterback

Following a five-year stint with three years as a starter for Notre Dame, Ian Book was taken in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Sean Payton believed he had the talent to be developed into a starter, even giving him one start that year.

Book was just 12-of-20 for 135 yards with no touchdowns and two picks in a 20-3 loss to Miami. When Payton left in the offseason, Book wasn't retained.

He's since spent time on the Philadelphia Eagles roster (2022) and New England Patriots practice squad (2023). He signed with the Chiefs on January 10 via a reserve/futures contract. In his preseason debut, he had 46 yards on 8-of-9 passing. This weekend, he went for just 16 yards on 2-of-4 passing.

At this point, he's behind 2022 seventh-round pick Chris Oladokun who led the Chiefs in passing in each of their first two preseason games. He should have the QB3 spot in hand with Carson Wentz set as the primary backup to Mahomes.
