4 Chiefs Still on Thin Ice Despite Surviving Roster Cuts
4. Christian Roland-Wallace, DB
Chiefs insider Matt Derrick confirmed on Tuesday that undrafted free agent defender Christian Roland-Wallace made the team's initial 53-man roster. The former Arizona/USC defensive back was signed by Kansas City back in May due to a lack of depth in the secondary following the offseason departures of L'Jarius Sneed and Mike Edwards.
After a solid training camp, Roland-Wallace played well for the Chiefs throughout the preseason. Seeing snaps as a safety and cornerback, the former Trojan allowed just six completions on eight targets for 64 receiving yards without a touchdown. While PFF only gave him a 53.8 coverage grade for his work, he still received an 85.8 tackling mark and an 85.1 run defense grade.
But even though Roland-Wallace cracked the roster, his work isn't over just yet. A big reason why he made the 53-man squad was because of the Chiefs' lack of DB depth. If any members of the secondary step up early in the season, Roland-Wallace could quickly find himself further down the depth chart.
Roland-Wallace likely won't see a ton of regular playing time, meaning he must take advantage of any opportunities sent his way. If he fails to show up when the spotlight shines on him, head coach Andy Reid won't hesitate to replace him with a hungrier DB.
