3 Wide Receivers the Chiefs Should Target Following Rashee Rice News
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs face a difficult but somewhat familiar situation with Rashee Rice's developing legal situation following a six-vehicle accident in Dallas, Texas over the weekend.
Kansas City dealt with similar troubles with Tyreek Hill before drafting Mecole Hardman in the 2019 NFL Draft and now needs to prepare for all possible outcomes. Rice reportedly retained legal counsel and we're expecting updates this week, though Brett Veach needs to be vigilant in ensuring the Chiefs' wide receiver room is ready for the upcoming season as the team tries to snag a third straight Super Bowl win.
There are a number of talented receivers available in the upcoming draft, though it'd be wise to add another veteran wideout prior to the draft as well. Here are three available free agents the Chiefs should add in lieu of potential Rashee Rice fallout:
3 Wide Receivers the Chiefs Should Target
1. Hunter Renfrow
Renfrow is one of the top receivers left on the market and would be a great fit for Kansas City as an established veteran with route-running chops and plenty of experience. We've advocated for the team to add Renfrow already this offseason, though the developing situation with Rice makes him an even more necessary addition.
The former Clemson standout underwhelmed in his last two years with the Raiders but I'd credit the limited production more to the organizational disfunction than to deteriorating skills. In 2021, Renfrow caught 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine TDs. He's still just 28-years-old and could be a low-cost option to give the offense some depth.
Kansas City's wide receiver room should be in much better shape than it was last year, especially if the team spends an early draft pick at the position. That being said, adding a reliable veteran like Renfrow would still provide a boost to the group.
His ability to contribute on special teams is a plus as well, as he's shown a willingness to tackle and exert maximum effort in the forgotten third portion of the game.
Provided the Chiefs could get Renfrow on a low-cost, short-term deal, I'm very interested in adding the former division rival.
