3 Chiefs Most Likely to Be Traded This Offseason

With the Kansas City Chiefs needing to re-sign several key free agents like Chris Jones and Willie Gay Jr., don't be surprised if the Super Bowl champs trade these three players this offseason.

3. WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling

One problem with the Chiefs is that they have a lot of wide receivers, but few of them consistently stick out for the right reasons. If the back-to-back Super Bowl champions want to trim some of the fat, Marquez Valdes-Scantling could be shown the door this spring.

Signed to a three-year, $30 million contract in 2022, MVS hasn't come close to matching the money that he commands. The St. Petersburg, FL native has been targeted 123 times over 33 games in the last two years, hauling in 63 balls (51.2%) for 1,002 receiving yards and three touchdowns. For comparison, 28 players had as many or more receiving yards in the 2023 season alone.

When it comes to the postseason, Valdes-Scantling has 15 catches for 250 yards and three TDs throughout seven postseason games. While that's far from a terrible showcase, it only puts him on pace for a 36-607-7 stat line during a 17-game season, which isn't the type of production you'd expect from a player carrying a $13.98 million cap hit in 2024 — the 22nd-highest among WRs.

The silver lining is that the Chiefs can get $11.98 million of Valdes-Scantling's contract off the books by trading him before or after June 1, per Spotrac. He's a solid player when he's on his game, but Kansas City would be silly not to take advantage of the kind of money they can save by trading the veteran pass-catcher.
