Much has been made in recent years about the decline of the Kansas City Chiefs' offense and the lack of elite numbers from Patrick Mahomes. What was once an offense that consistently produced 28-plus points per game, and a quarterback who seemed to accomplish 40-TD seasons at ease, is now a system designed to not fail rather than succeed. While this is a source of frustration on many levels, let's not overlook the difficult road that has been created for the three-time Super Bowl MVP.
It's clear that the supporting cast around the quarterback has steadily declined in recent years, and in 2025, everything came crashing down. An explosive run game was nowhere to be found, receivers in and out of the lineup, and an offensive line that suffered its own shortcomings. This statistic from YahooSports tells part of the story.

Simply looking at the numbers doesn't do justice to the difficult road that Mahomes has had, based on a lack of consistent receiver talent. This is evidenced by the fact that an aging Travis Kelce was the team's leading receiver in 2025, with Hollywood Brown having the highest yardage total among players at the receiver position.
Chiefs have created difficult road for QB Patrick Mahomes
Rejecting what many believe, Mahomes' own drop in production has nothing to do with him worsening as a player. Quite the opposite. It can be argued that no other signal-caller in the league could have brought a team like the Chiefs to the 2024 Super Bowl, which is exactly what Mahomes was able to do. Kansas City has just woefully failed to put the needed cast around the star.
So much trust is placed on the shoulders of Mahomes that it is far easier to simply save money spent on offense and trust Mahomes to figure things out. Considering that the Chiefs have appeared in three of the last four Super Bowls, this hasn't exactly ruined the team's chances.
Still, it would be nice to see the franchise put together a cast capable of supporting Mahomes at the level we watched the quarterback perform in his early seasons. Mahomes was a clear MVP and put up elite numbers that had him on Tom Brady's trail when it comes to all-time production. This has slowed, and that can be directly attributed to a regression from the current cast.
The 2026 season doesn't appear to be much different, save for the expected run game improvement by the departures of Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt and the additions of Kenneth Walker III, Emari Demercado, and Emmett Johnson.
The Chiefs' continued trust in Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy to be every-down guys is frightening, and Kelce isn't getting any younger. With this in mind, it is fair to wonder how long it will be before the Chiefs see the best version of the Mahomes return.
