Will he ace the test?

Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs have gone the extra mile to remind everyone who's who. They gave Patrick Mahomes another record-breaking deal, adding more years and money to his market-resetting contract.

The best quarterback in the game should be compensated as such, and few -- if any -- Chiefs fans will complain about Mahomes securing a bigger bag. He is, however, coming off the first major injury of his career, and that simply cannot be overlooked.

Mahomes looks far ahead of schedule and could realistically be back on the field in Week 1. Still, now that the team will be off for a little over a month before reuniting for training camp, ESPN's Nate Taylor believes this might be the most crucial offseason period in his career.

The Chiefs still aren't in the clear with Patrick Mahomes' injury recovery

"Much of this offseason for the Chiefs is about Mahomes' recovery from his left knee surgery and his involvement on the practice fields. In minicamp, Mahomes might see an increased workload with the hope he shows improvement with his footwork and mobility," wrote Taylor. "Following next week's work, the Chiefs will have a break of at least 40 days before training camp. If Mahomes' knee continues to strengthen, he could be ready to join his teammates for the 11-on-11 team periods when camp starts in St. Joseph, Missouri."

Mahomes has proven over and over that he's not like the average player. He's tough as nails and won't hesitate to play through bumps and bruises, and he routinely shakes off ankle twists that would've cost guys weeks. This isn't like most injuries, though.

The Chiefs' quarterback is dealing with a serious ailment. Sports medicine has advanced drastically in recent years, but ACL injuries have been career-altering to countless athletes across multiple sports.

Mahomes relies on his mobility to roll out of the pocket, escape pressure, and extend plays. While not the fastest guy, he's probably the most elusive, and with the Chiefs' questions at offensive tackle and the lack of skill players, he might be asked to do a bit more than he should in 2026.

All signs are encouraging, and the clips from Chiefs OTAs and minicamp show the same mobile Patrick Mahomes of old. It looks like he could suit up and play tomorrow if the Chiefs had a playoff game. That doesn't mean it will be that way when it's actually time to put the pads on.

Mahomes has been uber-aggressive in his approach to rehab. His determination is second to none, and he's clearly willing to put his body out there to avoid missing a single game next season. Still, the Chiefs must protect him from himself.

Next month will be crucial to determine where he truly is, and the Chiefs can't afford to put him in harm's way if he's not 100 percent ready to take the field, his feelings be damned. Getting back to the mountaintop might look like an uphill battle right now, but it will be nothing compared to this recovery.
