There's never a dull moment in Chiefs Kingdom, as the Kansas City Chiefs have reworked three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes' contract that now sets the signal-caller up to earn over $500 million and ties him to KC through 2033. It's the first time in NFL history that any player has agreed to a deal valued at over half a billion dollars, but it certainly shouldn't come as a shock.

Shortly after Mahomes won his first Super Bowl in 2019, general manager Brett Veach and, more importantly, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt opened up the pocket book and cashed Mahomes a check bigger than the league's ever seen. He was given a lengthy 10-year, $450 million deal ($45M/yr) that, at the time, did him a service as to how valuable he was to the team, while providing the Chiefs an incredible amount of flexibility to move money around each year in order to create massive amounts of cap space in order to roster talent acquisition.

Three years later, in 2023, Mahomes, now clearly the best player on the planet with multiple MVPs and multiple Super Bowl rings, Hunt splurged for a second time, restructuring the quarterback's contract once again to move money around and essentially reward him with a four-year, $208 million deal ($52M/yr), within the already signed 10-year deal.

Now, another trio of seasons later, KC has done it again, this time breaking the barrier of what was thought to be possible, handing Mahomes a massively revised contract in the form of a new eight-year, $504.75M contract, with more money in potential incentives that bring the AAV to a league-record-setting $64M/yr.

Patrick Mahomes' new contract shows firsthand how much the Chiefs franchise trusts him to become the best of all time

Hunt spoke via ESPN on Mahomes' new contract and what he means to the Chiefs organization and fanbase: "Over the last decade, Patrick has become one of the most iconic, beloved sports figures of all-time," Hunt said. "He has helped lead our franchise to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships, he has been instrumental in shaping the Chiefs' brand and putting Kansas City on the world stage, and on top of it all, he has been an outstanding role model in the community. Patrick is a generational talent and an elite human being, and I'm so excited he will continue to lead our team into the future."

It's an incredible testament to give Mahomes a contract of this magnitude while he is in the midst of recovering from a torn ACL and LCL suffered just six months ago. It speaks to how hard he has worked to get himself back to a position to potentially start in Week 1 and how committed he is to the game of football, his teammates, and the community of Kansas City.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy shared a sentiment years back in 2020 that I think explains just who Mahomes is as a football player. “You guys have been around him — you know him,” said Bieniemy. “He’s a competitive prick. Ok? He’s a great kid, but he’s a competitive prick. He wants to improve at everything he could possibly improve upon."

Short and simple and perhaps a little much, from the hard-nosed coach, but it's the truth. Mahomes is a football assassin. More times than not in his professional career, it's clear just how much competition fuels him, and that's how he has attacked this recovery process. He views rehab as an opponent, and he is going to do everything in his power to win.

Some may scoff at this contract in the coming days and try to explain in a roundabout way that the 30-year-old isn't who he used to be, especially coming off a major injury. But we Chiefs fans know him and this team better than most. Patrick Mahomes is not a guy you bet against.
