Patrick Mahomes terrified Chiefs fans in a Week 9 overtime 30-24 victory over the Buccaneers on Monday Night Football, suffering an injury that briefly hobbled him and required attention.
He quickly returned and led Kansas City to another victory, completing 34 of his 44 pass attempts for 291 yards and three TDs to no interceptions. Right after the win, he spoke to the broadcast and gave an update on his ailment.
Mahomes noted he rolled the same ankle he previously hurt but that he'd get treatment and ultimately be fine for Week 10 against the Broncos.
Patrick Mahomes Shares Injury Update After Chiefs Win
Since the Chiefs played on Monday, they'll have one fewer day of rest than normal. Denver is always a tough opponent and the Broncos will be desperate to earn a signature win in their chase for the playoffs.
Kansas City remains undefeated, though Mahomes' injury gave fans a brief moment of panic. Should he face a persistent pass rush again next week, the chance of further injury rises. The Chiefs' offensive line struggled for much of the night, especially left tackle Wanya Morris, potentially putting some pressure on Brett Veach to invest in that position ahead of the trade deadline.
Luckily, the Chiefs have already invested in a backup QB in Carson Wentz should disaster arise.
Protecting Mahomes is of the utmost importance. He's dealt with injuries throughout his career and typically battled through them successfully, yet it's still risky to put him in harm's way.
By saying he'll be good to go next week, Mahomes eased fans' minds. The chase for an undefeated season is suddenly becoming real, making his good health an overwhelming priority.
