Patrick Mahomes' Sudden Injury Scare Nearly Confirms Chiefs' Worst Nightmare
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs nearly saw their worst nightmare come true against the Buccaneers in Week 9, when superstar QB Patrick Mahomes had to be helped to the sideline after an apparent knee injury.
He hurt himself completing a game-tying TD pass to Samaje Perine, notting the contest up at 17 to start the fourth quarter. After spending time with trainers, Mahomes returned to the game and looked okay.
An injured Mahomes is the only thing that could derail this season and bid at a three-peat. The broadcast said it was a reported ankle injury and we saw how much that impacted him two years ago.
Patrick Mahomes Avoids Major Injury Scary
At first glance, it appeared to be a serious issue. All of Chiefs Kingdom's collective hearts fell until Mahomes triumphantly returned. The crowd went wild, realizing how close they were to disaster against Tampa Bay.
As long as Mahomes stays healthy, this is still without question the best team in the NFL. Carson Wentz is a capable backup, but he'll only be on the field in a worst-case scenario barring a situation in which the Chiefs are sitting starters.
Mahomes didn't appear hampered by the injury, leading the offense down the field in the rain on the ensuing drive. We'll see what he says after the game as well as what head coach Andy Reid's comments are.
It was a terrifying moment but it's seemingly okay. Chiefs fans can breathe a sigh of relief because QB1 is still on the field.
