Patrick Mahomes Apologizes for Hilarious Mistake During Chiefs' Win Over Bills
By Joe Summers
Patrick Mahomes doesn't make many mistakes on the football field. He's in the midst of the greatest start to a career in NFL history, punctuated by a dramatic victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship.
He has the Kansas City Chiefs on the precipice of a three-peat, though he had one hilarious mistake in Sunday's game that he's been forced to apologize for. After scoring on a 10-yard rush in the fourth quarter to give the Chiefs the lead, Mahomes tried to spike the ball like his teammate Travis Kelce usually does.
It didn't go well.
The ball seemingly slipped out of Mahomes' hands. Instead of spiking it into the ground, Mahomes accidentally sailed it near the stands.
He took to social media to take responsibility for the mistake in a funny post on X (better known as Twitter).

"That is why I don't try to spike the ball," Mahomes wrote with a laughing emoji. Fortunately, that was just about the only mishap the three-time Super Bowl MVP had in the game. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 245 yards and a TD, adding 43 yards and a pair of scores on the ground.
While Mahomes lost a fumble, he played a virtually perfect game otherwise. Should he finish the three-peat, he'll already be considered Tom Brady's peer as the greatest to ever live. Either way, he's got plenty of time to keep adding accolades to his stuffed trophy closet.
The Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of the epic Super Bowl from two years ago that saw him drag Kansas City to victory despite playing on a high-ankle sprain. That game started this three-peat talk, so it's fitting that it could finish it as well.
FanDuel Sportsbook currently has the Chiefs listed as 1.5-point favorites with -124 odds on the moneyline as Mahomes is poised to bring another Lombardi Trophy to Kansas City.
