Opening Odds for Potential Chiefs vs. Commanders Super Bowl Hint at 3-Peat
By Joe Summers
These NFL playoffs have been full of surprises, the most notable of which being the Washington Commanders' incredible surge from selecting star QB Jayden Daniels second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft to the NFC Championship.
The Kansas City Chiefs still need to overcome the Buffalo Bills in the AFC title matchup though if they do, oddsmakers have already released potential odds for the Super Bowl. Washington's opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles, is overrated in the market yet the odds from a Chiefs vs. Commanders game are more suggestive of what might actually happen.
This Washington team has enjoyed a fantastic season, but FanDuel Sportsbook would expect Daniels to come up short against Patrick Mahomes and the two-time defending champions.
Potential Chiefs vs. Commanders Super Bowl Opening Odds
Spread: KC -4.5 (-108) | WAS +4.5 (-112)
Moneyline: KC (-220) | WAS (+184)
Total: 49.5 - Over (-115) | Under (-105)
FanDuel lists the Chiefs as 4.5-point favorites over the Commanders with -220 odds on the moneyline and a total set a 49.5 that's slightly juiced to the over.
What this suggests is a competitive game that Kansas City winds up winning moderately comfortably. Give Daniels' inexperience and Washington's defensive issues, that's a reasonable expectation. The Commanders ranked 18th in opponent yards per pass (6.7) but fell to 26th in the last three weeks (7.7) as the competition got stiffer.
To tip the scales in the Chiefs' favor even further, Washington was 30th in opponent yards per rush (4.9) during the regular season, surrendering an even worse 5.2 mark in their previous trio of games. A Kansas City offense led by Mahomes, Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy, and company should have no problem moving the ball.
That'd leave the defense's performance as the only real question mark. Chris Jones, Trent McDuffie, George Karlaftis, Charles Omenihu, and Nick Bolton are proven playoff performers. From a sheer experience perspective alone, the Chiefs would be in fantastic shape.
We'll see what happens on Championship Sunday but if Kansas City can make it past Buffalo, things are looking up for that historic three-peat.
