NFL Announces Big Andy Reid News During NFL Playoffs
By Joe Summers
All of Kansas City is fully focused on the Chiefs' AFC Championship matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, though the NFL recently released awards finalists for the prestigious honors the league gives out on an annual basis.
Despite Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones' respective individual brilliance, neither was a finalist for MVP or Defensive Player of the Year. In fact, no Chiefs player received any award nominations.
That doesn't mean Kansas City was completely shunned though. Andy Reid was one of five finalists for AP Coach of the Year and it's hard to argue against the tremendous job he's done this season.
Andy Reid Named Finalist for NFL AP Coach of the Year
Despite dealing with a slew of injuries on both sides of the ball, Reid calmly guided the Chiefs to a 15-2 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC. This might be the best job he's ever done all things considered, and Kansas City has successfully navigated the media hysterics to put themselves in a position to three-peat.
Reid has just one Coach of the Year award in his illustrious career. It came with the Philadelphia Eagles and surprisingly, Reid has never won the honor in Kansas City. He's widely recognized as the league's best coach, yet that doesn't seem to matter to voters.
Dan Campbell, Sean Payton, Kevin O'Connell, and Dan Quinn are the other finalists. It's widely assumed that the award is O'Connell's to lose, though no one would suggest that the Minnesota Vikings' coach is better than Reid.
Not that any of this matters to Reid or the Chiefs. They're focused on winning Super Bowls, something they've done quite successfully in recent years. Entering Sunday's AFC title game, Kansas City is +210 to hoist another Lombardi Trophy at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Should the Chiefs win it all but Reid isn't honored with Coach of the Year? It feels like Big Red will be just fine with that.
