The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of needs in free agency and have moved quickly to fill some of their holes. The re-signing of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and an agreement with left tackle Jaylon Moore was a good start, but the Chiefs needed to do something about their secondary.
Cornerback was one of the biggest needs as the Chiefs needed to sign a legitimate partner for Trent McDuffie. Kansas City filled that hole by agreeing to a two-year, $20 million contract with Krisitan Fulton on Tuesday and it led to the former division rival making fans a promise on Wednesday morning.
New Chiefs Cornerback Kristian Fulton Promises The ‘Best Is Still To Come’
Fulton took to his Instagram account after news of the deal surfaced and delivered his message to Chiefs fans. While the 26-year-old hasn’t officially signed with Kansas City, he all but confirmed it by telling Kansas City fans that the best is yet to come.
“God will do it!” Fulton wrote. “If you know my journey you know He always had me! Believe my Best is Still to Come! #chiefskingdom”
Fulton’s message is standard for a player switching teams but it could be the case. The LSU product was a second-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 draft and saw his overall Pro Football Focus grade jump from 56.1 in his rookie year to 64.1 during the 2021 season. But he has also had struggles in coverage, posting a coverage grade under 60 three times in his first three seasons.
After signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency, Fulton found his way posting a career-best 68.9 overall grade and a 66.6 coverage grade last season. He also allowed 0.98 yards per coverage snap and his 5-foot-11, 197-pound frame is prototypical size for an outside corner.
It should be an addition that helps the Chiefs secondary. McDuffie turned into one of the league’s top cornerbacks with an 82.0 overall grade last season and Jaylen Watson performed admirably with a 69.6 overall grade around breaking his ankle in a Week 7 win over San Francisco. With Nazeeh Johnson struggling mightily, the Chiefs wanted to add depth, which led to Fulton’s arrival in Kansas City.
The secondary struggles didn’t affect the Chiefs on their way to their fifth Super Bowl appearance in the past six seasons but adding Fulton should help them make another bid to get back to the big game in 2025.
