The Kansas City Chiefs have had several intriguing storylines to watch this offseason as the team recovers from a devastating loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, which robbed the organization of a historical three-peat bid.

Depth at wide receiver and cornerback has been a big topic of conversation, as has the potential of a Travis Kelce retirement and the ongoing question marks on the left side of the offensive line. However, the right side of the frontline deserves discussion as well.

Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith has more than earned a large contract decision, though the franchise elected to place him on the franchise tag. The Chiefs have until July 15 to sign him to a long-term deal and avoid the tag, and one new rumor suggests the two sides are nearing a deal.

Chiefs Rumored to Be Nearing Trey Smith Contract Extension

Take this for what it's worth, because it may not be much, but Twitter user @SlickRickScoops, who has become popular by breaking news ahead of typical NFL insiders, claims that the Chiefs and Smith are expected to come to a long-term deal before the deadline.

It's generally understood that Kansas City and Smith are discussing a deal. After trading away Joe Thuney, it felt obvious that general manager Brett Veach would prioritize keeping Smith as a long-time stalwart on the right side of the line. With Jawaan Taylor potentially leaving the team after this year, having Smith form a duo with Creed Humphrey makes a lot of sense.

As it stands, Smith is on a $23.4 million franchise tag. The former sixth-round pick out of Tennessee has become a fixture of this offense, and it's hard to imagine these two sides not coming to an agreement of some sort.

Smith needs to be here. Whether or not this rumor is accurate remains to be seen, but it's a positive sign given Smith's importance. Protecting Patrick Mahomes is all that really matters, as we've seen illustrated both in wins and losses, so this feels like a no-brainer decision.

With four more days to go until the long-term extension deadline, here's hoping Smith stays in Kansas City for years to come.
