It is hard to find words for what exactly Kansas City Chiefs star running back Kenneth Walker has accomplished early in the 2026 season. Walker's incredible 2026 performance continued against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, rushing for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a game where the Chiefs controlled it from start to finish.
While the defense did its share of the heavy lifting, much of this control is due to Walker helping Kansas City's offense stay on the field and offer a mix of big plays and keeping the chains moving.
This is where KC fans are going to point to just how incredible Walker might be if the Chiefs had rostered capable receivers. With Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton both currently out it is incredibly underwhelming to look at the options presented to Patrick Mahomes. Still, it only adds to how incredible Walker has been and why fans have a continued expectation that this will become a balanced attack capable of returning to the Super Bowl.
Kenneth Walker III is the first player with 750+ scrimmage yds and 8+ TD through the first 5 games of a season since Priest Holmes for the 2002 Chiefs.

NFL Researcher provided the above quote, proving just what an elite start this has been and why Walker deserves a place in the MVP conversation. The back is accomplishing this in Andy Reid's offense, despite guys like Tyreek Hill or prime Travis Kelce taking the pressure off him.
Times have changed drastically, with Walker being the motor of the offense and taking pressure off Mahomes and a group of underwhelming pass catchers. No question, the playmaker has been the best rusher in the league and is doing so without an easy road, offering a nice blend of punishing runs and explosive runs.

Looking at the rushing numbers alone, Walker has offered six touchdowns and 665 yards while averaging over six yards per carry. This is production impossible to imagine in comparison to years past, when the entire offensive load was on the shoulders of Mahomes. The quarterback was forced to run often and take a level of punishment that led to KC's downfall a season ago.
No question, Kansas City learned from last year's failure by going out and adding the Super Bowl MVP and a player who has a clear argument as an MVP contender at this point in the season. With quarterbacks failing to show consistency in this race early on, it remains very possible that Walker begins to earn serious consideration.
It is fun to watch and should give the Chiefs a higher sense of urgency when it comes to adding to the receiver position to have a complete offense. One capable of getting the most out of Walker, who, as shocking as it seems, could find another level if Kansas City's front office makes the obvious move.
