The Kansas City Chiefs keep winning, but that doesn't mean they're in the clear. Even with an undefeated 5-0 record and a perfect 3-0 record against the AFC West, Andy Reid's team still has some imperfections to work through.
Some of those are personnel-related. But if general manager Brett Veach won't make the moves he needs to make to give Patrick Mahomes a hand, then it's up to those in the building to step up and prove that they can contribute.
That was the case with rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen in Week 6, for sure. While the numbers didn't pop up, the Chiefs' fifth-round pick certainly made the most of his limited (yet expanded) opportunities against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Cyrus Allen can be a problem-solver for the Kansas City Chiefs
Allen drew a defensive pass interference on his first target of the game. Then, he secured two catches on as many targets for 27 yards. Again, it might not sound like much, but it shows that he's on the same page with the quarterback, which is no small thing.
The Cincinnati product slipped through the cracks of the NFL Draft process because of his complex history with transfers and apparent physical limitations, but he turned heads from the moment he arrived at the Chiefs facility. He was impressive in training camp and the preseason, and he must be on the field.
Also, with Tyquan Thornton out for the season, the Chiefs could certainly use a vertical threat. Tyreek Hill isn't walking through that door any time soon, and even if he does, he may have lost a couple of steps after all the years and his major injury. Allen is right there.
The Chiefs have been infamously patient with their young wide receivers, sometimes to a fault. Granted, Andy Reid's offense is complex and whatnot, but sometimes all it takes is trust and helping the guys grow through their mistakes by getting them on the field.
Mahomes is high on Allen; he said it before the win over the Chargers. He knows no one's coming to save the passing game, and while he's always been a master at doing a lot with a little, the Chiefs must shake things off and test everything.
The Chiefs are one of the few undefeated teams in the league, and rightfully so; they've looked like a Super Bowl contender again. But now, they must trust their depth and their scouting department and see what they have in their hands with their youngsters.
