Kadarius Toney Gearing Up for Major Role With New Team
On Monday, former Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was elevated from the Cleveland Browns practice squad for their Monday night showdown against the Denver Broncos. Toney was evaluated for the game due to an injury sustained by wide receiver Cedric Tillman.
Unfortunately for Toney, he wasn't too involved in the game. His biggest contribution was a jet sweep, where he gained three yards. Nevertheless, it seems like Toney is in line for a bigger role this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to Daniel Oyefusi, ESPN's Browns reporter, Toney will "potentially" be the Browns' primary punt returner on Sunday.
Kadarius Toney may be the Browns' primary punt returner on Sunday
Toney has a history of returning kicks/punts. During his time in Kansas City, Toney returned 16 kicks for a total of 119 yards. His most memorable punt return was in Super Bowl 57 against the Eagles.
Toney took the punt 65 yards and then got tackled at the Eagles' five-yard line. The Chiefs ultimately cashed in that return for a touchdown and ended up winning the Super Bowl 38-35.
While Toney has struggled to be a consistent receiver he can clearly be an explosive punt returner. Although the Browns have no chance of making the playoffs, they have been fighting in these games with Jameis Winston.
Potentially, putting Toney back to receive punts could add more juice to possible victories. Though many fans would like to see the team lose to increase draft position, the players and coaches want to win as many games as they can.
