As the Kansas City Chiefs' offseason continues to near its end, fans couldn't help but notice an eye-catching quarterback ranking. ESPN put together a top-ten list, with the determining factor being votes from league execs, coaches, and scouts. What came as a surprise was the fact that it was Patrick Mahomes coming in second behind Josh Allen. It defies logic with there being no career accomplishment of note that Allen can boast over Mahomes.
Still, it seems that there is a prevailing opinion throughout the league that the Buffalo quarterback is the more talented option heading into the season. Ignoring history is a dangerous choice, and this is exactly what the poll is opting to do by not looking at the bigger picture and understanding just how much better than Allen, Mahomes has been through the entirety of his career.
Stat | Josh Allen | Patrick Mahomes |
|---|---|---|
Playoff Wins | 8 | 17 |
H2H Playoff Record | 0-4 | 4-0 |
Passing Touchdowns | 220 | 267 |
Playoff Passing Yards | 3,915 | 5,814 |
Regular-season Rushing Yardage | 4,721 | 2,665 |
The only numbers that are in Allen's favor are when you consider the quarterback's ability as a rusher. While this is an undeniable piece of the star's game, it doesn't explain the lack of wins when it matters most. Not only does Allen not have one signature playoff win, but the quarterback has gone winless against the Chiefs when the game matters most.
Even a season ago, with it appearing to be Buffalo's year and the Chiefs sitting at home, Allen was unable to make a Super Bowl run. Mahomes might have the better head coach and pieces around him over the course of the rivalry, but this cannot be pointed to as a reason for last year's failure, as Allen lost to the Denver Broncos in embarrassing fashion to lowly Bo Nix.
Ranking Josh Allen ahead of Patrick Mahomes undeniably disrespects Chiefs' accomplishments
Allen is 0-2 in AFC Championship games (both losses to Mahomes), while Mahomes has played in five Super Bowls and come away with three wins. When talking about legacy and which player has been able to deliver when the money is on the table, there isn't going to be a reasonable debate against Mahomes. It is fair to wonder if the reason for this ranking is simply league sources growing tired of the greatness of the quarterback.
Consistency is boring, and that is exactly what the signal caller brings to the table, making at least the AFC Championship every reason he has been healthy. Another piece of the puzzle that must be factored in is the fact that for much of Mahomes career, the quarterback puts games away long before the final tick of the clock.
Mahomes has rarely needed the flashy moments that Allen has benefitted from due to spending the early quarters of the game putting it away. No question, to rank Allen above Mahomes is disrespectful to the Kansas City quarterback and ignores history.
This simply serves as an undeniable motivation for Mahomes and hands Kansas City ample ammunition for the season ahead. A season that is going to surprise a lot of pundits and remind the league of the greatness of Mahomes.
