Although the Kansas City Chiefs entered the offseason having a good idea where wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown would sign, those plans hit a detour after the opening week of free agency. However, Tuesday provided some clarity that may not work out for him in the long run.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Brown is signing with the Philadelphia Eagles for one year and up to $6.5 million. As big of an addition as that is to Philadelphia's offense, it is fair to pump the brakes and realize that Hollywood Brown is probably not a No. 1 WR at this point in his career. He also goes to an Eagles team that is highly explosive in terms of chemistry, and he may be pushed to the side in A.J. Brown's quest for targets, with DeVonta Smith there as well.

Brown's first season in Kansas City back in 2024 was cut short after he suffered a severe collarbone injury. After the Chiefs brought him back on another one-year, $7 million deal, Brown had 49 catches for 587 yards and five TDs while posting a career-high success rate (54.1 percent) when targeted. With that said, injury concerns and a lack of consistency prevented him from taking that next step with the Chiefs and could limit his playing time in Philadelphia as a result.

Marquise "Hollywood" Brown's Inconsistency Could Be a Concern with the Eagles

Brown has played seven NFL seasons and amassed 371 catches for 4,322 yards and 33 TDs. However, a lot of that success came during his first three seasons in the league with the Baltimore Ravens from 2019-21. In that stint, he had 195 receptions and 21 TDs, which is a far cry from his production since then. Even on a Kansas City team that featured Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton as its top receivers, Brown could not stand out and consistently perform at the level he began his career at.

Brown has obviously made a lot of headlines for some of the comments he has made regarding Philadelphia's offensive struggles. Despite that, he and Smith combined for 2,011 receiving yards last season, so Brown will likely have to settle for WR3 duties, which is still not guaranteed to work out in his favor.

Jahan Dotson was Philadelphia's third-leading receiver last season behind Brown and Smith, but he only had 262 yards and one TD. When Jalen Reagor was an Eagle from 2020-21, it was a similar situation for him with 396 yards and a TD in Year 1 and only 299 yards and two TDs in Year 2. To be fair, he has had less success since he departed the Eagles, but that shows the challenge that could be in front of Brown and the limited role that could be awaiting him.

After a disappointing 2025 season that ended without a playoff appearance, there are plenty of options for the Chiefs to pursue in the upcoming draft as they look to find a suitable replacement for Brown. The sense of urgency only increased on Tuesday when Kansas City's AFC West rival, the Denver Broncos, landed WR Jaylen Waddle in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins. That still leaves plenty of work to be done for the Chiefs after an underwhelming start to the offseason, but it does not mean it's been all disappointing.

Brown showed promise and had some bright spots with the Chiefs, but there was simply not enough consistency to keep him around. While it appeared he had an opportunity to be a go-to option on a team with QB concerns, that never materialized. Instead, Brown may be worse off as he falls in behind Brown and Smith on a stacked receiving corps in Philadelphia, a situation that history suggests may not be too kind to him.
