The Kansas City Chiefs decided to make a change in their quarterback room. After Carson Wentz struggled in his lone start last season, the Chiefs replaced him with Gardner Minshew. The 28-year-old signal-caller, who started in 22 games over the last two seasons, is now going to be Patrick Mahomes' backup for the 2025 season.

Minshew is going to be one of the more experienced and qualified QB2 in the league. In his six-year NFL career, he has 46 starts (17-29 record) and a Pro Bowl appearance when he was with the Colts. Despite this, however, Minshew can't contain his excitement to join Kansas City. Per ChiefsWire's John Dillon, the former Raiders QB said all the right things in his first remarks as a Chief.

"I look forward to just working with him (Patrick Mahomes), helping in any way I can, whether it’s on the practice field (or) in the meeting room. (When) getting ready for game days, if there’s film preparation I can help with or even, like I said, providing a good laugh here or there. I just couldn’t be more grateful for the role and (I) just want to help in any way I really can."

Minshew pointed out that being a starting QB in the NFL is very difficult. Mahomes has a ton of expectations put on him, and Minshew wants to help him out in different ways. The former sixth-round pick said that he wants to contribute to "having a safe place in the quarterback room where you can come and let off some steam or just have a good laugh."

Focusing on the little things he can do outside of the field is an important insight into Minshew's mindset. He knows that the Chiefs are in trouble if Mahomes goes down regardless. Instead of focusing on what he can do in Mahomes' absence, Minshew is smartly discussing what he can bring to the table when Mahomes is healthy and available.

Having a reliable backup QB is massively important in moments of emergency on the field. It is equally important to have someone in that role who your star QB can trust off the field. Minshew is off to a good start so far on that front.
