The Kansas City Chiefs currently have the best quarterback in the NFL, Patrick Mahomes. Even so, having a viable option to back Mahomes up is important. That's why Kansas City signed Gardner Minshew and Bailey Zappe. While both QBs have proven to be solid backups, Minshew has a little more of a proven track record in the NFL.

That said, the Chiefs allowed Carson Wentz, who has more experience starting than Zappe or Minshew, to leave in free agency. However, it's been reported that the move from Wentz resulted from his belief that he could still be a starting quarterback.

On Wednesday, that belief took a step closer to becoming a reality. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, there is mutual interest between Wentz and the Cleveland Browns if Russell Wilson doesn't end up in Cleveland.

The Cleveland Browns Have Interest in Signing Carson Wentz

The 32-year-old quarterback appeared in three games for the Chiefs in 2024. However, the most extensive playing time he saw was in Week 18 as a starter when he played with the other backups. In that outing, Wentz went 10/17 for 90 yards.

While that's an underwhelming performance, Kansas City was by no means trying to win that game, so Wentz wasn't asked to do much. Nonetheless, those would be the type of performances Wentz would put together if he stayed with the Chiefs, so his desire to leave was understandable.

The last time the former North Dakota State product played the whole season as a team's starter was 2021 with the Indianapolis Colts. That year, Wentz completed 62.4% of his passes (322/516) for 3,563 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Following a decent season with the Colts, Wentz signed with the Washington Commanders. In Washington, Wentz started the first six games and then sustained an injury that put him on injured reserve.

After being activated Wentz only started one more game due to the emergence of Taylor Heinicke. Wentz ended the 2022 season by completing 62.3 of his passes (172/276) for 1,755 passing yards, 11 touchdows and nine interceptions.

That performance led Wentz to be a backup in 2023 and 2024. Despite that, given the quarterback scarcity this offseason, Cleveland is willing to take a shot on him. Whether it works out or not is yet to be seen, but Chiefs Kingdom wishes Wentz the best in his future endeavors.
