Frustrating Chiefs Coaching Scenario Is Already Being Teased

The Chiefs have no excuse to not make changes to Andy Reid's staff after the 2025 season.

With the Kansas City Chiefs sitting at 6-7 on the season and consistently unable to get out of their own way, it is far from a hot take to point out that there should be expected coaching changes. A mindset that every franchise would seemingly have when one unit is clearly falling below expectations. However, this isn't the case for the Chiefs, with Farzin Vousoughian noting the comments of ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. The respected insider reported that Kansas City isn't expected to explore any coaching changes.

Furthering this, both defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy were mentioned as potential head coaching options. This is extremely surprising when it comes to Nagy, who has been a consistent source of frustration among the Kansas City fan base. Keping Spagnuolo makes sense as the Chiefs' defense is the only reason the team has six wins and has had consistent chances in recent losses.

However, the Chiefs' opting to keep Nagy is a huge surprise and speaks to a sense of contentment that is the author of this season's failures. Kansas City's offense has grown stale and complacent, and you're obviously never going to consider getting rid of one of the greatest coaches of all time in Andy Reid. Nagy is the complete opposite, having struggled as a head coach and joining the Chiefs at a time when the offense took steps in the wrong direction.

Chiefs Offer Concerning Update on Outlook of 2026 Coaching Staff

It is important to be clear here that there isn't a reasonable Chiefs fan or pundit who isn't going to be excited about bringing Spags back for the 2026 season. The issue isn't the defensive coordinator, who has been a consistent producer with a large variation of defensive talent on his roster. The Chiefs are lucky to have him and would be thankful if the coordinator returns for another year.

However, the exact opposite sentiment is the case for Nagy, who clearly should be fired at the end of the season. This roster is badly in need of new energy and perspectives after a year of failures. It doesn't matter how the rest of the season plays out; watching the Chiefs' offense the past two years tells the story of why changes must be made.

Patrick Mahomes is often forced to be your leading rusher in big games, and an offense with Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy unable to create big plays is begging for a change. The Chiefs hinting at keeping things at the status quo is alarming and points to the fact that the franchise seemingly hasn't learned its lesson from the 2025 season.

Fans simply have to hope that this report is simply an early denial from KC decision-makers who will eventually come to the right conclusion. After a season full of failure, there are no excuses not to make several meaningful changes, including parting ways with a coordinator who simply isn't getting the job done.
