The Kansas City Chiefs' fan base has had an up-and-down relationship with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Although a lot of the franchise's recent success is owed to him, it was always going to be impossible for the coordinator to live up to previous expectations based on the lack of elite weapons. It hasn't mattered that head coach Andy Reid is the one making the decisions, as any setbacks offensively have all been laid on the shoulders of Nagy.
With that being said, some fans might feel mixed about the rumors surrounding Kansas City's OC. On Monday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Tennessee Titans are interested in Nagy for the vacant head coaching role after firing Brian Callahan. It would be an interesting move that allows a change to the offensive coordinator position and finding out just how much, if any, Nagy is holding the Chiefs back.
Chiefs OC Matt Nagy Reportedly Among Top Options for Titans' Head Coaching Role
What is most interesting is whether or not the Chiefs might opt to make a change that benefits the practice style if Nagy were hired. One of the biggest criticisms of Nagy has been a lack of intensity, which current Chicago Bears running backs coach and former Chiefs coach Eric Bieniemy brought during his stint as offensive coordinator (2018-22). It didn't matter whether you were Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, or the last man on the roster; the coach wouldn't hesitate to call you out.
It was the perfect "bad cop" to Reid's far more forgiving and player-focused coaching style. If there is one thing that the Chiefs are missing offensively, it is this voice in the room who isn't afraid to be the villain. Nagy getting hired by the Titans would open up this opportunity.
Whether it is bringing Bieniemy back or looking at a more forceful presence to replace Nagy, the idea of parting ways with the coordinator is somewhat appealing to a Chiefs fan base that understands it remains on the doorstep of historic greatness. Every possible improvement in the next season must be explored to maintain the success for as long as possible.
Nagy being removed naturally from the position is the best-case scenario for a Super Bowl champion who hasn't done anything that deserves demotion. If his becoming a head coach ends up benefiting the Chiefs in the long run, Kansas City fans won't complain and will wish for a hypothetical hiring to become a reality sooner rather than later.
