It's hard to imagine that Super Bowl 59 was nearly five months ago. The Kansas City Chiefs have spent almost half a year figuring out how to rebound from the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which led to general manager Brett Veach using free agency and the 2025 NFL draft to give head coach Andy Reid the best tools to succeed next season.

This spring's organized team activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp shed some light on the Chiefs' outlook, and all signs point to them being Super Bowl threats again. It's an exciting time to be on the Kansas City roster heading into training camp, which is bound to make former Chiefs players in less promising situations feel a bit jealous.

Speaking of ex-Chiefs, some are still unemployed ahead of training camp — including one former quarterback who likely won't land a new NFL contract anytime soon.

Former Chiefs QB Blaine Gabbert Won't Get a Job Soon

Being Patrick Mahomes' backup QB is one of the easiest jobs in the NFL, which is what Blaine Gabbert got to experience during the 2023 campaign. The former Missouri product only had to make one start while attempting 35 passes that season, and capped things off with his second Super Bowl victory.

Having said that, Gabbert has been unemployed ever since he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. He went unsigned throughout the 2024 campaign despite numerous QB-related vacancies around the league, and is still unemployed without any job prospects only a few weeks out of this year's training camp sessions.

The fact that Gabbert doesn't have a job at the moment means he likely won't receive a contract offer soon. Most NFL teams have a good idea of how their QB rooms are shaping up by now, and those whose pecking order is undefined likely have better options than a 35-year-old option with one start under his belt since 2019.

Assuming an opportunity doesn't materialize during training camp, it might be time for Gabbert to consider calling it a career. He's won two Super Bowl rings while making over $27.2 million in career earnings, per Spotrac, meaning he should be able to retire comfortably even if he isn't ready to walk away from football just yet.

While being unsigned might be frustrating, Gabbert is facing a reality that many aging athletes deal with each year. The good news is that the ex-Chiefs QB has plenty to be proud of if this is the end of the road, and Kansas City fans will patiently await to see what the future holds for him next.
