Training camp in the NFL is always a brutal time of year for players, as they're typically subjected to harsh weather conditions while simultaneously trying to curry favor with coaching staffs ahead of the regular season.

We've already seen a fight at Kansas City Chiefs practice, and it's somewhat of a tradition for physical altercations to break out over the course of the month.

The Chiefs aren't alone in that trend, and one former Kansas City starter who won a Super Bowl with the organization just got into a fight on Thursday.

Former Chiefs S Juan Thornhill Starts Fight at Steelers Training Camp

As captured on video, ex-Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill started a fight with tight end Jonnu Smith at the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp. Thornhill was beaten on an impressive route and catch by Smith, who proceeded to throw the ball at Thornhill, prompting the fight.

It's probably much ado about nothing, but it does showcase how easily fiery tempers can flare in these moments. Both Thornhill and Smith project as starters, and given the physicality that the Steelers pride themselves on, something like this happening at some point was inevitable.

Originally a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by Kansas City, Thornhill spent four seasons with the organization before going to the Cleveland Browns and now winding up in Pittsburgh. He started 52 games for the Chiefs during his tenure, notching 234 tackles, eight interceptions, and a forced fumble. He's a decent but not great safety, ranking 72nd out of 171 qualified players at Pro Football Focus in 2024.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin likely appreciates the passion that both players displayed. It's a critical year for Pittsburgh now that Aaron Rodgers is under center, and the team has heightened expectations in what figures to be a brutally competitive AFC.

Thornhill got beat on this play, but he made sure that Smith knew he wouldn't be taunted. While none of it matters in the end, you can bet there will be more camp fights before it's all said and done.
