Training camp fights are seemingly inevitable, whether it is fringe roster players fighting for a role or veterans setting the tone. The Kansas City Chiefs are no exception, with Tuesday's practice resulting in the first notable fight.
A punch was thrown with rookies Josh Simmons and Ashton Gillotte getting into it. The offensive lineman punched Gillote, who responded by removing the offensive lineman's helmet and continuing the altercation. It is understandable that both rookies are attempting to set a tone, looking to establish their place with a prestigious franchise. Simmons, especially, is under pressure to be productive from Week 1.
The Chiefs' offensive line has been a point of concern dating back to the end of the 2024 season. Trading veteran guard Joe Thuney only added to this and has left some obvious question marks for the unit.
With this in mind, Simmons is huge in stabilizing the unit and giving Kansas City a reason to believe the group won't cost the team yet again when it matters most. All of this helps to explain the edge Simmons is playing with, even early on in camp. There is a level of expectation on the lineman from the moment his number is called.

Three consecutive days in pads, it was bound to happen: We have a punch.

Josh Simmons punched fellow rookie Ashton Gillotte after a rugged 9-on-7 period repetition. Gillotte removed Simmons’ helmet.
I cannot properly describe to you how miserable it is out here in St. Joe.
This goes a long way in explaining the fight, along with it being pointed out that the miserable heat is impacting much of the league. Playing such an intense sport doesn't need the weather to help invite higher levels of frustration. All of this explains the fight and leaves little reason for concern for Kansas City. If anything, camp fights are a positive sign of an invested group that refuses to accept losing.
For Simmons, this is especially exciting with the level of expectations the franchise has placed on the young tackle. Fighting isn't encouraged, but it does show a level of care and investment you can't help but respect. As long as no injuries are sustained and cooler heads prevail, it is a sign of a team heading in the right direction.
Kansas City will continue training camp with its first preseason action slated for August 9th on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. This will offer Chiefs fans their first real look at an exciting rookie class.
