Failed Former Chief Cut Right Before Facing KC in Week 15
By Joe Summers
Failed former Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney was unceremoniously cut by the Browns following a disastrous performance on Sunday during Cleveland's blowout loss.
Toney quickly fell into hot water with his new coach thanks to his penalties and muffed punt at the end of the game. Obviously, Kevin Stefanski and the front office didn't see a future with Toney and cut him loose.
After being let go by the Chiefs entering the season, it appears Toney's NFL career could be ending before his rookie deal is even up.
Browns Cut Former Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney
In three games with Cleveland, Toney failed to catch his only target while rushing twice for -4 yards along with the fumble. The 2021 first-round pick is an electrifying talent, yet his poor focus and hands have doomed him in his last two stops.
It's likely that Toney will get another chance somewhere on a practice squad but he's now worn out his welcome at two spots. Still just 25 years old, there's time for Toney to right the ship and still become a productive player.
That said, he'll have to find a team willing to take a chance on him. Despite Kansas City's massive issues at wide receiver over the last two seasons, the team didn't want to keep Toney. Considering he knew the system and has special teams value, a reunion theoretically would've made sense once the Chiefs suffered significant injuries at the position.
However, Andy Reid and Brett Veach weren't interested. That says all that you need to know, and Toney's stint with the Browns went as poorly as possible. He still holds the record for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history and scored a TD in that game too, though the Chiefs were happy to move on without him.
It's a disappointing development for an exciting, fun player. Unfortunately for Toney, he's got a lot of work to do in the offseason to get another chance in the league.
