The Kansas City Chiefs had every reason to be excited about rookie Cyrus Allen, as the receiver was the breakout story for the KC offense in the first week of training camp. The clear chemistry with Patrick Mahomes was undeniable, making it clear Allen has a great chance to start the 2026 season as the fourth option behind Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton.
Expectations of a continued strong showing in camp took an undeniable hit when Allen went down earlier in Saturday's practice and was feared to have suffered a season-ending knee injury after colliding with cornerback Kaiir Elam on a special teams play.
Luckily, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it seems Allen will be just fine. "Tests on Chiefs rookie WR Cyrus Allen revealed a shin bruise, per source. Nothing was torn or broken - a best-case scenario." This is exactly the update that Kansas City fans were hoping for, but serves as a reminder of just how thin the depth is at the receiver position and why a reunion with Tyreek Hill continues to make a great deal of sense.
Hill is still recovering from a multitude of serious knee injuries that will likely keep the eight-time Pro-Bowler out until halfway through the season. But before Hill went down, he posted 265 receiving yards in three and a half games and was clearly still a great option. It makes sense to bring in Hill, as one kink in the armor of Thornton, Rice, or Worthy could prove devastating for their replacement. There isn't one primary contributor at the position that isn't facing some form of concern.
The Chiefs are in dire need of depth at receiver and an old friend in Tyreek Hill could help fix that
Bringing in Hill elevates the Chiefs' offense and doesn't take away the chance from Allen to seize an important role. The former Chiefs star is likely to miss time at the start of the season and is simply an investment in the future if injuries strike or players are unable to live up to expectations. No question, it makes sense for both sides, and Allen's injury scare served as a reminder of how fragile the current depth chart is.
For Hill, there is zero reason to believe that he wouldn't consider a reunion, as he has continuously hinted at a Chiefs return the minute he was traded. He has been vocal about his respect for Andy Reid and Mahomes, leaving every reason to believe that he would welcome a return.
It would give the Chiefs a great chance to turn back the clock to having an explosive and balanced offense. One that has been missing for the last three seasons after the departure of Eric Bieniemy. It would be fitting for Hill to return alongside the offensive coordinator and help remind the league that Kansas City's dynasty isn't over just yet.
